Dockmaster talking to member on the docks before a member sail

DSC Dockmasters

Thank you for your interest in volunteering as a DSC Dockmaster! Dockmasters are essential to our biweekly member sails, helping to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and welcoming experience for all participants. All members are welcome to volunteer, no experience is necessary. With 50 member sails per season, there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer and the time commitment is just one hour per session.

Dockmaster Orientation

The orientation slideshow below should answer all of your questions about being a dockmaster! There is also a video of a recorded dockmaster orientation available.  If you still have questions after viewing all of the slides and/or watching the recorded session, please feel free to email the office

To watch the orientation in full screen mode, click the three dots to the right of the slide number in the lower left corner of the presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the role of a Dockmaster?

A Dockmaster’s primary responsibility is to ensure a smooth and safe Member Sail experience for all participants. This includes checking boat reservations and ensuring boats are present, greeting and checking in sailors, reporting weather conditions, assisting with crew assignments, and helping with boat launches.

Do I need to be an experienced sailor to volunteer as a Dockmaster?

While sailing experience is beneficial, it is not required. As a Dockmaster, you'll focus more on managing logistics, weather checks, and coordinating crews. All new volunteers have the opportunity to shadow an experienced dockmaster who will show them the ropes and explain the procedures.

What information do I have to communicate at the start of the sail?

At the beginning of the sail, give a safety briefing, including weather updates (storm risk, lightning, wind), and remind skippers to monitor conditions throughout the sail. If lightning is imminent, instruct everyone to get off the water and docks. Announce sunset times for Wednesday night sails and advise skippers to return before sunset. Ensure participants are aware of emergency procedures, including VHF channels 16 and 71.

How do I handle crew assignments?

As members arrive, check them off the registration list and ask skippers about their sailing goals (practice, fun sail, skill development). Assign crew based on available spots, and consider skill level and goals. New sailors or those seeking to practice specific skills should be paired with experienced skippers. If there are more crew than boats, ask if any crew have been oriented on Hansas or kayaks and would be willing to take one out instead.

What happens once everyone is on the water?

Once all sailors have boarded their boats and are on their way, your primary duties are complete. However, you are welcome to join a boat crew or stay on the dock and monitor VHF channels 16 and 71 for any further assistance.

How do I log my volunteer hours?

After completing your duties, be sure to log your time spent as a Dockmaster in the Volunteer Hours Reporting Form.
