Students who successfully complete the written and practical on-the-water skills test for this course  will have "demonstrated the ability to responsibly skipper and crew a simple daysailing keelboat in familiar waters in light to moderate wind and sea conditions…[and] will be able to skipper a tiller-steered keelboat up to 27 feet in length."1 A US SAILING Basic Keelboat Certification course consists on a full weekend of sailing, Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM to 4:30 PM. A US SAILING Keelboat Instructor and up to three students are on the water in a Sonar or J/22. Sonars are 23-foot keelboats and J/22s are 22-foot keelboats, both of which are safe (non-capsizable), comfortable and fun.

  • anchoring and mooring

Prerequisites: Knowledge and skills covered in Introduction to Sailing and Intermediate Sailing.

Note: This DSC course is not intended to be a stand-alone course leading to US SAILING Basic Keelboat Certification. A student who has not completed the DSC’s Introduction to Sailing and Intermediate Sailing courses must demonstrate a working knowledge of all of the concepts and skills presented in these aforementioned courses before registering for this certification course. This course is designed to build upon the set of knowledge and skills presented in the Introduction to Sailing and Intermediate Sailing courses so that a student is prepared to successfully complete the knowledge and skills requirements of the certification standards for US SAILING Basic Keelboat Certification.

Students should print their own copy of the US SAILING Basic Keelboat Certification Student Curriculum. Students - who do not already have a copy - will receive a copy of US SAILING's Basic Keelboat and a US SAILING Official Logbook of Sailing. Students must demonstrate a working knowledge of the concepts and skills in Basic Keelboat.
