The Downtown Sailing Center is partnering with The Chesapeake Down Syndrome Parent Group to create a sailing program for teenagers and adults who have Down syndrome who would like to learn how to sail! The program will be divided up into 5 session throughout the summer. It will teach sailing and valuable life lessons.  Each participant will get time and practice in two kinds of boats and get to show off what they learned in a mini regatta at the end!

Session 1 is the Open House Kickoff event. We will be running short 20 min sails on some of the boats and setting up a few table stations to showcase topics that the group will learn throughout the summer. We will need the following volunteers:

  •  2 sonar skippers
  •  2 crew members
  • 3 sailing buddies
  • 2 greeters
  • 2-3 station operators (help with fun sailing related activities)
  • 1 powerboat operator / safety coach

We are asking volunteers to arrive as close to 5PM as possible to help rig the dinghies and set up the tables.

The Participants are expected to arrive at the sailing center around 6:00PM. The event should wrap up around 7:30PM.

Refreshments and pizza will be provided.

It will be a great opportunity for volunteers to experience one of our accessible programs in a relaxed atmosphere. Since the program has a smaller group of participants it allows for the volunteers to learn the ins and outs while helping an amazing group of people learn to sail.

There is training available for all of these positions, if you are interested in learning about a specific role feel free to call the office at 410-727-0772 or email Johanna Murphy, the DSC Volunteer Coordinator at:
