University of MD Rehab Accessible Sail- September 14th

Registration

  • You will be helping to sign in the participants, assist with life jackets, help participants into the boats and help rig and de-rig the boats (we will instruct you.) No prior exp necessary!
  • Ride along in an Access Dinghy with the participant. Limited sailing knowledge is helpful, but not necessary. These boats are safe and easy to sail. We will teach you how to sail during the event!
  • You will be helping the Transfer Lead volunteer to guide participants in wheel chairs into the boats using a hoyer sling. Prior hoyer lift experience is helpful, but not necessary. Training is available!

NOTE The date has been changed to Tuesday Sept 13th! Downtown Sailing Center will have a group of folks from the University of Maryland's Rehabilitation and Orthopedic Hospital join us at the sailing center from 4:30PM-7:00PM. The program is very similar to our Access-Ability Saturday event. Volunteers are asked to arrive at 4pm (or as close as possible) to help rig the boats. We need skippers and sailing buddies as we will be sailing in both Access Dinghies and sonars. 

It will be a great opportunity for volunteers to experience one of our accessible programs in a relaxed atmosphere. Since the program has a smaller group of participants it allows for the volunteers to learn the ins and outs while helping an amazing group of people learn to sail. 

The DSC needs volunteers to fill the following positions:
  • rigger and de-rigger of boats
  • sailing buddies
  • greeters
  • 1 transfer aide
  • safety boat operator
  • sonar skipper 
  • sonar crew 
  • Escorts
