Students who successfully complete the written and practical on-the-water skills test for this course will have "demonstrated the ability to responsibly skipper and crew a simple daysailing keelboat in familiar waters in light to moderate wind and sea conditions…[and] will be able to skipper a tiller-steered keelboat up to 27 feet in length."1 A US SAILING Basic Keelboat Certification course consists of two options: either a 4-day course of 8 hours day from 9:00 - 5:00 or two weekends of 8 hours days, 9:00 - 5:00. A US SAILING Keelboat Instructor and up to three students are on the water in a Sonar or J/22. Sonars are 23-foot keelboats and J/22s are 22-foot keelboats, both of which are safe (non-capsizable), comfortable and fun. Topics covered include: advanced boat handling reefing anchoring and mooring Prerequisites: None required, but highly recommended to have had some time on boats even just to get oriented and see "if you like it".
