Our US SAILING Basic Keelboat (BK) Certification course consists of five+ days of sailing instruction. US Sailing only requires three days; we go beyond. Designed for you to progress from a beginner to a winner, BK course features the top quality instructors, boats, and location for developing your skills. A US SAILING Keelboat Instructor and up to three students are on the water in one of our J/22s. J/22s are 22-foot keelboats that are safe, comfortable, and fun.

We go beyond US Sailing's minimum standards with more time and we go beyond other schools' standards by giving students a workbook specifically developed and tested through years of instruction and revision.

Students who successfully complete the written and practical on-the-water skills test for this course  will have "demonstrated the ability to responsibly skipper and crew a simple daysailing keelboat in familiar waters in light to moderate wind and sea conditions…[and] will be able to skipper a tiller-steered keelboat up to 27 feet in length."

Prerequisites: None required, but we highly recommend spending some time on boats before committing to the full US Sailing Certification Course. For advanced sailors, you may find the Beyond Intro Course more appealing.

    • Sail Trim
    • Quick-stop Overboard Rescue
    • Weather

Students must demonstrate a working knowledge of the concepts and skills in order to receive their Basic Keelboat certification, a globally recognized sailing certification. One enrolled, your instructional packet will be available to you for pick up at the DSC.

This Two Day, hands-on, on-the-water course is for anyone who wants to learn how to safely operate a small motorboat and improve their boat handling skills on REAL BOATS.

US Powerboating, an affiliate with US Sailing, has been working with the USCG to provide the best powerboating course out there.

The Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling Course is designed for those individuals who have their state boater's certificate but want on-the-water training. Maryland residents can earn their Safe Boater's Certificate through Boat US Foundation's NASBLA approved certification course HERE.

While the online course is rigorous and informative, the Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling Course is designed to build the critical on-the-water skills you need to effectively operate powerboats.

This course is great for young and old alike, and our top notch instructors enable us to cater to your personal learning style.

The Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling Course is not NASBLA approved; Proof of a state boater's certificate is a REQUIRED for the course - no exceptions. The MD State course is available online for free and takes about six hours to complete.

For this course, approximately 50-60% of the course focus is on 'close-quarters' maneuvers, which includes docking, departing, and turning within confined areas. The remaining 40-50% of the course focuses on high-speed safety, including what to do in emergency situations. US Powerboating's teaching methodology incorporates on-the-water and off-the-water tools that maximize your effective learning time on the water.

This course will run through the basics of sailing, introduce you to some cool nautical lingo, and get you on the Harbor for an afternoon of sailing.

    Boats and Facilities

Our 3-hour "Taste of Sailing" is taught aboard our Sonar class keelboats. These 23' boats have a large cockpit and heavy keel to provide stability. These boats are specifically made to not tip over, so you don't need to worry! Sailing from the Downtown Sailing Center will allow you to see explore Baltimore from the water in a fun and safe way.

Parking is available on site in the gravel lot of the Baltimore Museum of Industry. For most of the summer, the BMI farmers market is just wrapping up as the sailing begins. Classes meet just outside the gate on the main docks. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early to orient yourself and meet your coach.

Please also remember to bring a water bottle, sunglasses, hat, close-toed shoes and a great attitude. We'll see you on the water!

"Intro to Sailing" 12 Hour Course, Sat & Sun. June 6 & 7

Have you always wanted to learn how to sail? Do you want to experience the joys of sailing? Want to have a great experience in the greatest city in America? What to know the difference between ropes and lines?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, Intro to Sailing is the course for you!

The course is designed to help new sailors feel comfortable on a boat and teach them the basic skills needed to competently crew on a small keelboat with an experienced skipper. An experienced instructor and up to four students (usually only three students) are on the water in a Sonar or J/22. Sonars and J/22's are keelboats which are safe (non-capsizable), comfortable and fun.

If you have sailing experience but are rusty or did not learn from professionals, we strongly recommend taking this course. "Intro to Sailing" is a prerequisite for the "Beyond Intro" course.

This is a no-cost, volunteer-run program that allows individuals with disabilities to experience the freedom of sailing and help them learn to sail.

Sailors come to the Downtown Sailing Center (DSC) and are coached and often accompanied by a tireless group of volunteers, friends and family.

Our two boat choices are "Access Dinghy" and "Keelboat." The Access Dinghy is a small two person sailboat that is specifically made for people with limited mobility. They are easy to sail and can be sailed solo, with a family member or friend, or a DSC volunteer sailing buddy.  The Keelboats are Sonar and Freedom sailboats, which do not tip over and can sail with a whole family.

When you register to sail, please pick the type of boat. The DSC strives to give everyone the opportunity to sail, but we have a limited number of boats and volunteers, so occasionally we may have to make small changes to boat assignments.

Note: If you decide that you want to switch the type of boat to sail after registering, please let the staff know the morning of the event and we will try to accommodate this change.

If you have further questions about the Access-ability Program, please feel free to contact Johanna via johanna@downtownsailing.org

"Intro to Sailing" 12 Hour Course, Sat & Sun. June 13 & 14

FULL PAYMENT IS REQUIRED TO RESERVE YOUR SPOT FOR THIS COURSE. SPACE IS LIMITED.

Each boat will have up to 4 people aboard with a coach, so there will be plenty of opportunity to try your hand at the tiller or just relax and take in the sights.

Sailing is an exhilarating way for children to improve their teamwork, concentration, and self-confidence...while having a ton of fun! Our Adventure and Performance camps provide your child with a safe camp experience they will remember for the rest of their lives.

Adventure Camp is focused on encouraging a life-long love of sailing and is for persons 8 - 14 years old. Our Camp is designed to provide your child with a safe, FUN environment to grow as a person - and sailing is the vehicle we use to make it happen! Our small-group size, typically with a 4:1 camper to staff ratio, help us cater our instruction to different ability levels. When registering siblings, use the "Guest" feature to continue registering siblings.

If you would like to enroll your child in before- or after-care, please indicate your intention by selecting the appropriate "before-care" or "after-care". Each of these options is offered at an additional cost per family (only one before-/after- care charge per family).

Friday Night Fun Racing: Fun for DSC Members & Friends

*This is a Member/Volunteer Run sail. There will be no staff on site so a Crew/Skipper member will be distributing teams onto boats. Dock Call is 5:30PM

The Friday Night Fun Race is a pickup sailing distance race that starts promptly at 6PM between the DSC docks and the Tiki Barge and races out to the first red buoy marking the Middle Branch. All crew members are encouraged to connect with skipper-level members during member sails and other events to secure a berth on a boat.

"Regulars" will usually hold a few spots open for new sailors and the whole process is meant to be a fun and relaxed atmosphere. No prior racing experience is needed but some sailing experience/knowledge is helpful. This is a congenial and low stress introduction to racing.

The sign-up for this event is for information purposes only. As a volunteer driven event, it is incumbent upon members to arrive at the docks early enough to secure a spot on a boat with another skipper member. Unlike member sails, the full-time staff will not be responsible for sorting and managing boat groups.

BOAT RESERVATIONS must be made in advance and skippers assume full skipper liability of the vessel as per the Skipper Assumption of Risk and Liability form

Crew Level members, If you have not done so already, please sign and submit your Liability Waiver to DSC staff.

Want to practice your skills with all women at the helm? Come out to our Women on the Water Wednesdays, being held on the last Wednesday of July, August, and September. Each Clinic is an opportunity for women to focus on a certain sailing skill they want to master.

The clinic is informal so when you arrive we will break into small groups and have women instructors on site to provide little to a lot of guidance as needed.

The Downtown Sailing Center welcomes women of all skills and experience levels to participate with us, including non-DSC-members. A small fee for nonmembers of $25/session helps us maintain our boats and pay some of our instructors.
