This is a no-cost, volunteer-run program that allows individuals with disabilities to experience the freedom of sailing and learn to sail.

Sailors come to the Downtown Sailing Center (DSC) and are coached and often assisted by a tireless group of volunteers, friends and family. Sailing time will be from 11:00am until 1:00pm.

The boat we offer is a "Hansa Access Dinghy," which is a small one- to two-person sailboat specifically made for people with limited mobility. They are easy to sail and can be sailed solo, or with a family member or friend.

This year, due to COVID-19 concerns, we are unable to provide volunteer sailing buddie, or use the Sonar and Freedom 20 keelboats, but we sincerely hope to be able bring them back to this program in 2021.

**Everyone who wishes to participate must wear a mask at all times while on campus and on the docks. Mouth and nose must be covered.*

Please be sure to carefully review our 2020 Safety Protocol and event schedule prior to your commitment to sailing with us:

Our US SAILING Basic Keelboat (BK) Certification course consists of five+ days of sailing instruction. US Sailing only requires three days; we go beyond. Designed for you to progress from a beginner to a winner, BK course features the top quality instructors, boats, and location for developing your skills. A US SAILING Keelboat Instructor and up to two students are on the water in one of our Sonars. Sonars are 23-foot keelboats that are safe, comfortable, and fun.

We go beyond US Sailing's minimum standards with more time and we go beyond other schools' standards by giving students a workbook specifically developed and tested through years of instruction and revision.

Students who successfully complete the written and practical on-the-water skills test for this course  will have "demonstrated the ability to responsibly skipper and crew a simple daysailing keelboat in familiar waters in light to moderate wind and sea conditions…[and] will be able to skipper a tiller-steered keelboat up to 27 feet in length."

Prerequisites: None required, but we highly recommend spending some time on boats before committing to the full US Sailing Certification Course. For advanced sailors, you may find the Beyond Intro Course more appealing.

    Curriculum Highlights

    • Close-Quarters maneuvering
    • Sail Trim
    • Quick-stop Overboard Rescue
    • Weather
    • Tides and Currents
    • Chart Basics
    • Reefing
    • Figure-8 Overboard Rescue
    • Tiller extension use

Students will receive a copy of US SAILING's Basic Keelboat, The DSC's Keelboat program packet, and a US SAILING Official Logbook of Sailing. Students must demonstrate a working knowledge of the concepts and skills in order to receive their Basic Keelboat certification, a globally recognized sailing certification. One enrolled, your instructional packet will be available to you for pick up at the DSC.

"Intro to Sailing" 12 Hour Course, Sat & Sun. April 10 &11

Have you always wanted to learn how to sail? Do you want to experience the joys of sailing? Want to have a great experience in the greatest city in America? What to know the difference between ropes and lines?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, Intro to Sailing is the course for you!

The course is designed to help new sailors feel comfortable on a boat and teach them the basic skills needed to competently crew on a small keelboat with an experienced skipper. An experienced instructor and up to two students are on the water in a Sonar. Sonars are keelboats which are safe (non-capsizable), comfortable and fun.

If you have sailing experience but are rusty or did not learn from professionals, we strongly recommend taking this course. "Intro to Sailing" is a prerequisite for the "Beyond Intro" course.

This Two Day, hands-on, on-the-water course is for anyone who wants to learn how to safely operate a small motorboat and improve their boat handling skills on REAL BOATS.

US Powerboating, an affiliate with US Sailing, has been working with the USCG to provide the best powerboating course out there.

The Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling Course is designed for those individuals who have their state boater's certificate but want on-the-water training. Maryland residents can earn their Safe Boater's Certificate through Boat US Foundation's NASBLA approved certification course HERE.

While the online course is rigorous and informative, the Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling Course is designed to build the critical on-the-water skills you need to effectively operate powerboats.

This course is great for young and old alike, and our top notch instructors enable us to cater to your personal learning style.

The Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling Course is not NASBLA approved; Proof of a state boater's certificate is REQUIRED for the course - no exceptions. The MD State course is available online for free and takes about six hours to complete.

For this course, approximately 50-60% of the course focus is on 'close-quarters' maneuvers, which includes docking, departing, and turning within confined areas. The remaining 40-50% of the course focuses on high-speed safety, including what to do in emergency situations. US Powerboating's teaching methodology incorporates on-the-water and off-the-water tools that maximize your effective learning time on the water.

    9:00 - 5:00, April  5-Day, Wednesday-Sunday, April 21st-25th

    Spring Basic Cruising Course -

    April 24th & 25th, May 1st and 2nd

    8:30AM - 5PM each day for class

Ever dreamed of owning or chartering or owning your own cruising sailboat?
US Sailing's Basic Cruising Certification Course is a 4-day intensive sailing course in which you will learn to responsibly skipper and crew an auxiliary powered cruising sailboat during daylight hours, within sight of land in moderate wind and sea conditions.

Participants need to have successfully completed the US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification in order to qualify for the Basic Cruising Certification.

The cost for the course includes all study and testing materials; the cost does not include Basic Keelboat Certification costs. A participant may challenge the Basic Keelboat Certification before taking the Basic Cruising Course, but all students should be proficient small-keelboat sailors under normal conditions and come into the course with the prerequisite skills linked HERE. Please see the cruising education webpage for further prerequisite information.

If you need to challenge the Basic Keelboat Course, please contact Graham Humphrey via graham@downtownsailing.org or call the office at 410-727-0722

TASTE OF SAILING - 3 HR. INTRODUCTION

You've probably probably thought, "I've always wanted to try sailing." Well, our 3-hour Taste of Sailing course is here for you!

This course will run through the basics of sailing, introduce you to some cool nautical lingo, and get you on the Harbor for an afternoon of sailing.

    Boats and Facilities

Our 3-hour Taste of Sailing is taught aboard our Access Dinghies. They are 10' long, weighted centerboard boats that allow two people to sail together. These boats are specifically made to not tip over, so you don't need to worry about that! The boats make sailing intuitive, so learning to sail becomes fun and worry-free!

Sailing from the Downtown Sailing Center will allow you to see explore Baltimore from the water in a fun and safe way.

Parking is available on site in the gravel lot of the Baltimore Museum of Industry. For most of the summer, the BMI farmers market is just wrapping up as the sailing begins. Classes meet just outside the gate on the main docks. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early to orient yourself and meet your coach.

Please also remember to bring a water bottle, sunglasses, hat, close-toed shoes and a great attitude. We'll see you on the water!
