The Downtown Sailing Center (DSC) began offering youth sailing programs in 1990 to make sailing available and convenient to all Baltimore-area children. Sailing is an exhilarating way for children to develop teamwork skills, improve concentration, and become more self-confident. Most importantly, our camp focuses on the FUN your child wants while providing the SAFE environment you look for as a parent.

All of our summer camps maintain a 5:1 camper/instructor ratio or better. Most of our campers will experience a 4:1 camper/instructor ratio throughout their entire camp experience. This small-group setting enables our staff to provide customized, personalized education and care for your child.

Junior Summer Camp: Beginner to Advanced Sailing

Ages 8-15 (cost: $320 for members; $400 for non-members)

The DSC is committed to providing your son or daughter with a safe, FUN, and engaging summer experience. In addition to providing quality sailing instruction, we are committed to providing lots of structured play time as well as supervised, unstructured time for your child to grow. Our Junior Summer Camp seamlessly blends sailing education with fun activities. Your child will learn to sail in a safe environment, but they will also have the opportunity to be kids and to have fun!

Beginner, Intermediate, and advanced sailors alike will get to experience the fun and joy of sailing in our J/22, Sonar, and Access Dinghy Sailboats this summer. Our primary vessel is the J/22, but we do "dinghy daze" once every couple of weeks and we use the Sonars to sail over to Fells Point or out past Fort McHenry.

Beginners spend the majority of their time learning the basics of sailing through an experiential environment. Intermediate sailors will spend more time honing their sailing skills and sailing knowledge through more in-depth chalk talks and more focused sailing on the J/22s. Advanced sailors will work toward sailing the J/22s on their own, developing the skills and confidence they need to skipper and crew on larger, faster boats.

Weekly activities include:

  • Four Square - The de facto camp game, played during every break and after lunch!
  • "Fort Run" - Every week, our campers will race out to Fort McHenry in our J/22s, accompanied by power boat support.
  • "BOP Day" - Typically held on Wednesdays, our sailors take a trip over to Historic Fells Point to enjoy classic "Brick Oven Pizza" and chill on the Bond Street Park lawn. Sailors are welcome to bring their own lunches and enjoy the relaxing lunch.
  • "Regatta Day" - Typically held on Thursday afternoons, all of our campers mix it up with fun, spirited racing on the Harbor. Depending on the group size, racing may be held in our Access Dinghies or in our fleet of J/22s.
  • Rainy Day Movies - Got rain? Not a problem! Our campers enjoy great classics like Wind, Finding Nemo, Pirates of the Caribbean, White Squall, Morning Light and the new favorite Maiden Voyage. Our staff keeps the movies age-appropriate, so you can rest assured you child doesn't bring home anything new other than sailing skills.
  • Water balloon toss - Hot? No Wind? Our staff ensure your child is having fun, regardless of the conditions.

Keelboat Spinnaker Camp - Limited Weeks, Limited Spots!

Ages 12-16 (Cost: $320 for members; $400 for non-members)

Now in its third year! This camp experience is geared toward advanced sailors who have demonstrated the ability to skipper our J/22s without instructor assistance. Sailors must be at least 12 years of age and have experience driving a J/22 without a coach aboard. If you are unsure of your child's preparation for this program, we strongly recommend talking with one of our staff before registering for this program. The DSC piloted this program last year with our advanced campers, and all staff for this course hold US Sailing Level 1 and/or Basic Keelboat Instructor Certifications.

The instructors will combine hands-on instruction with powerboat-coaching support to provide up-to 8 campers with a unique, rewarding educational experience. Campers will eat lunch and enjoy some of the fun activities of the normal summer camp (such as "BOP Day"), but more emphasis will be placed on the study of performance-oriented sailing and campers will have the responsibility of sailing a boat without an instructor aboard.

This camp is a perfect step up for those who have successfully completed the Basic Keelboat Certification Course (below) or those who have sized out of their racing programs and are looking for a fun alternative.

Basic Keelboat Certification:

Ages 12-18 (cost:$390 for members; cost: $475)

This one week certification offering will put your son or daughter’s sailing skills to the test.  Participants will be working with a Basic Keelboat instructor to learn all the terminology and sailing requirements to successful sail a small keelboat on their own, without an instructor assisting them. Last year, the eight youth participating in the program were sailing on their own by the end of the week, with an instructor close by on a powerboat.

Prerequisites: Students need to have attended a sailing camp for at least 3 years prior to taking this course and preferably for more than one week per year. This course is classroom intensive; students will be responsible for completing homework each night, and they will be working closely with other youth in a fast-paced environment. Our Certification Courses offer a great amount of student freedom, so good behavior is expected of every student.

US Sailing Safe Powerboating Certification:

Ages 12-18, Cost:$320 for members; cost: $390

This 4-day program is focused on teaching participants how to safely operate a small powerboat. Participants will learn how maneuver a powerboat in tight spaces, practice high speed stops and learn the basic mechanics of a powerboat.
