Volunteer Registration: Session 3 Chesapeake Down Syndrome Sailing Outing

The Downtown Sailing Center is partnering with The Chesapeake Down Syndrome Parent Group to create a sailing program for teenagers and adults who have Down syndrome who would like to learn how to sail! The program will be divided up into 5 session throughout the summer. It will teach sailing and valuable life lessons.  Each participant will get time and practice in two kinds of boats and get to show off what they learned in a mini regatta at the end!

Session 3 is the Access Dinghy Sailing event. We will be teaching the participants how to rig the boats, what the parts of the boat are and basic sailing. Then they will get a chance to go out sailing We will need the following volunteers: 

• 5-10 sailing buddies 
• 1-2 greeters 
• 2 escorts 
• 1 powerboat operator / safety coach 

We are asking volunteers to arrive as close to 5PM to help with any set up. We realize that some of you may be getting off work, which is fine, just please notify Volunteer Coordinator, Johanna, if you plan to arrive later. 

The Participants are expected to arrive at the sailing center around 6:00PM. The event should wrap up around 7:30PM.

Refreshments and pizza will be provided. 

It will be a great opportunity for volunteers to experience one of our accessible programs in a relaxed atmosphere. Since the program has a smaller group of participants it allows for the volunteers to learn the ins and outs while helping an amazing group of people learn to sail.
