Our US SAILING Basic Keelboat (BK) Certification Challenge course consists of a sailing skills evaluation, knowledge-based assessment, and certification test. This one-day evaluative course is designed for sailors who already possess the sailing skills necessary to skipper a small keelboat but lack the US Sailing certification. Our BK course features the top quality boats and location for showcasing your skills. A US SAILING Keelboat Instructor will guide you and up to two other students on the water in one of our J/22s.

Students who successfully complete the written and practical on-the-water skills test for this course  will have "demonstrated the ability to responsibly skipper and crew a simple daysailing keelboat in familiar waters in light to moderate wind and sea conditions…[and] will be able to skipper a tiller-steered keelboat up to 27 feet in length."

For more information about US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification or more information about its Certification Series, click here. For details about certification requirements, click here.

Students will receive a US SAILING Official Logbook of Sailing and a one-year membership with US Sailing. A course book is not included in with the Challenge course. Students must demonstrate a working knowledge of the concepts and skills in order to receive their Basic Keelboat certification, a globally recognized sailing certification. One enrolled, your instructional packet will be available to you for pick up at the DSC. For more information, contact Stuart Proctor at 410-727-0722 or email him via Stuart@downtownsailing.org.
